1975: Pink Floyd releases Wish You Were Here, a masterpiece about their leader Syd Barrett who lives in the sad exile of drugs and paranoia. They want him to get back into recording and touring to show off his creativity.
In the two cases, Barrett and Jackson, we can find lots of similarities. Michael is running away from the press and finance problems, hiding in a country that will give him everything he wants, but will keep him frozen and living in a golden cage. Syd Barrett exiled himself in
Cambridge, and while the Floyd was recording a tribute album for him, they wouldn't even recognize him when he walked into Abbey Road Studios, completely shaved and overweight.Say what you want about Jackson now, that he's a child molester, a pervert, a freak... but come on, didn't he suffer the excesses of fame and fortune the same way Syd did? The Jackson picture and the Pink Floyd cover mean the same: alienation, and a quiet desperation for peace. The Jacko and the English way.
