Best strip of the year: Knight Life

If you read Keith Knight's cartoons is like you've known the guy all your life. The Knight Life is just plain funny but, besides funny, it's incredibly cool and it's been enhancing the cartoon pages of several newspapers in the U.S.



His work reminds me a little bit of the one of Tex Avery and John Kricfalusi , but his exaggerations go beyond structures and drawing classes. Somehow he has developed his own style and he definitely is a role model for lots of cartoonist wanna-be's, including myself. I honestly don't see anything he could have copied or based his style from, although his character's expressions seem to have been present in cartooning and comics. His characters aren't supposed to criticize your life or make "social comments". They're busy living their lives and dealing with their own issues. We, the readers, are the ones who comment on these stories, and laugh at the same time.



This Mexican Coca-Cola series is one of the funniest things I've ever read on a newspaper in my entire life. In five innocent strips, Knight describes a laughable situation, creating parallels with the current drug war in Mexico and keeping the political comment out of the vignettes, for us to make it. For my spanish-speaking readers, I'll translate it:





-¿Estás vendiendo qué?

-¡Coca-Cola mexicana! ¡Es mejor que la versión de Estados Unidos!



-¡Viene en botellas de vidrio! ¡Tiene azúcar de verdad en vez de jarabe de maíz de alta fructosa! ¡Puedes en verdad saborear la diferencia!



-Guau, está buena.

-Sólo tengo que vender doce cajas para pagar por las que ya he consumido.





EN EL TELÉFONO CON PAPÁ

-¿Ya conseguiste algún trabajo extra?

-Estoy ayudando a mi vecino a vender cajas de Coca-Cola que trae de Tijuana.



-¿Estás en un negociado con un traficante de coca mexicana?

-Sí, creo que sí.





-¡Qué bien! Así no tendré que mentirle a mis amigos sobre cómo te ganas la vida.







-OK, nena, nos vamos a recoger más coca mexicana

-Ten cuidado



-Gunther, ¿en verdad vale la pena ir hasta la frontera por una caja de gaseosas?

-En realidad no vamos. ¡Es sólo finta!



-¿Qué quieres decir?

-¡Le compro mis provisiones a una taquería a tres cuadras de aquí!







VENDIENDO COCA-COLA MEXICANA

-¿Keith? ¿Eres tú?

-¡Disfruta!



-Quiero agradecerte por la clase de caricaturas que diste en el orfanatorio.

-No hay problema, hermana Fran.

-¡Hey!



-Eres un gran ejemplo para los niños.

-Gracias.

-¿Dónde está el sorbete para la coca que me vendiste?





-¡Gunther! ¡Necesito otra caja! ¡Se agotaron!

-Se acabó. Nuestros días de vender coca-cola mexicana se han terminado



-¿Por qué?

-Aparentemente, estamos entrometiéndonos con algunos elementos del tráfico de coca mexicana.



-¿Cómo sabes?

-¡Alguien decapitó mi gnomo en mi patio frontal!
